ABC Announces Renewed Shows

Now that we are days away from a probable end to the writers strike, ABC has felt comfortable talking about the network’s future. Although the rest of 2007-08 remains unclear, the 2008-09 year is starting to take shape.
A total of nine shows have so far received renewal notices from the Alphabet network. That’s not to say more won’t come. But many programs not currently listed may have reason to be nervous.
Of the shows returning this fall, five are ‘veterans’; four are newbies that survived their freshman year. Those programs (in alphabetical order) are: Brothers & Sisters, Desperate Housewives, Dirty Sexy Money, Grey’s Anatomy, Lost, Private Practice, Pushing Daisies, Samantha Who? and Ugly Betty.
A sampling of those not mentioned include October Road, Carpoolers, Cavemen, Boston Legal, Men in Trees and Women’s Murder Club. (Big Shots is apparently dead already.)

The Oscars Backup Plan

The Academy has consistently promised that, writers strike or no, the annual Oscars ceremony will in fact take place. Statements have been released. Comments have been made. And until recently, the Academy seemed to be sticking to its guns. But…just in case, they’re working on a contingency plan.
Scheduled for Feb. 24, the Oscars show we expect may not at all be the one we see. For now, the Academy is working on two different shows. The usual awards spectacle is still in the works, but now a second show is being planned that will include “history and packages of film and concepts” that aren’t “normally ones that we would have.” Gee, sounds great. But no matter what, they say, the show will go on. It must! How else will Hollywood honor itself?
The Academy has made contact with the Writers Guild in hopes of inking some sort of deal.

Thanks to the cancelation of the Golden Globes ceremony, the hottest ticket in town was tonight’s Screen Actors Guild Awards. Without a picket line to cross, celebrities from TV and Film were allowed to celebrate - and commiserate - together for the first time in a long while.
For star-deprived fans, the SAG red carpet was also a treat for sore eyes. What were our favorite actresses wearing? What were the latest trends? Which dresses were going to be copied by Allen Schwartz tomorrow?
Unfortunately, the evening was not all about partying. The recent deaths of Suzanne Pleshette and Heath Ledger cast a somber tone on what would normally be a festive occasion. Thankfully, tonight was not about dissecting their lives, but merely about honoring them.
Meanwhile, the neglected winners of this month’s Globes were also hoping to get a share of the honors. If they were able to pull off another victory tonight, maybe they would have a chance to give the speech they already had written.
Well, without further ado, here’s the play-by-play of tonight’s events coming to you from the fashionably late West Coast!

Writers Return to ‘Mad Men’, ‘Weeds’

Thanks to an interim deal between Lionsgate and the WGA, fans of at least two scripted programs have the comfort of knowing their shows will eventually return.
Because they are part of Lionsgate Television, production on both Mad Men and Weeds can once again resume. Writing on the AMC drama was scheduled to begin way back on November 7th. Meanwhile, this recent turn of events has proved quite timely for the Showtime series; work on the 4th season was originally slated to start about now.
As a bonus, AMC has just started re-airing episodes from Mad Men’s first season. Those interested in catching up on the Golden Globe-award winning series should set their DVRs for Sunday nights @ midnight (12am on Mondays).

More Deals Struck With Writers Guild

Although a deal with a major studio has yet to be reached, the Writers Guild has been striking gold in other areas. Late this week, the union was able to boast signed agreements with three other companies: RKO, Marvel Entertainment and Lionsgate. These interim pacts are similar to the ones already reached with The Weinstein Company and United Artists.
In the meantime, informal talks between the WGA and studio reps began last Tuesday and continued through the week.

Could the Writers Strike Really Be Ending?

The Writers Guild has just dropped two of their demands: proposals to unionize animated movie and reality TV writers. This brings us all right back to the central issue: Internet and new-media revenue. By the Guild’s own admission, this concession (which comes only after the writers were repeatedly asked to make just this concession) is an olive branch - everyone wants the strike to end. Negotiations will continue this week as both sides try to reach some conclusion.
The writers have also made the decision not to picket the Grammy ceremony, which bodes well for the rest of the awards season. The striking writers, so far, have not agreed on an interim deal which will allow them to be a part of the musical spectacle. But there does seem to be some hope on the horizon…at last.

Oscar Nominees Talk Strike

The Academy Award nominations have been announced, AMPAS is determined the show will go on in February, and everything seems to be moving toward the big night (the Oscar ceremony). But…is it, really? The Writers Guild is in talks with the producers, and all parties seem to be hopeful this whole strike might end. According to some nominees, that’s the only way they’ll even attend the event.
Tony Gilroy, nominated in the Best Director category, told the Associated Press he “would never cross a picket line ever.” Viggo Mortensen, who received the Best Actor nod, likewise said that if the strike continues he’ll not be on the red carpet. Others, like producer Scott Rudin, said they doubt there will even be an Oscars event if the strike isn’t solved beforehand.
The Academy, however, is sticking to its guns; President Sid Ganis said they will put on the show. That settles that.

The nominations for the 80th Annual Academy Awards were announced early this morning from the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. Assuming the ceremony goes on as scheduled, you can see the live broadcast Sunday, February 24th on ABC.

The nominations for the 80th Annual Academy Awards were announced bright and early Tuesday morning from the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. Assuming the ceremony goes on as scheduled, you can see the live broadcast Sunday, February 24th on ABC.
Notable additions/omissions from today’s announcement:
- Based on the major categories alone, it looks like Michael Clayton may be the frontrunner. It received six nominations.
- Aside from one nod each in the Best Supporting Actor category, both Into the Wild and Charlie Wilson’s War were virtually shut out from the top prizes.
- Sweeney Todd - winner for Best Comedy/Musical at the Golden Globes - was shut out for Best Picture. Johnny Depp’s nom was the only major accolade for the film.
- A much-deserving Amy Adams did not receive a nom nor did her film, Enchanted.
- Atonement - the movie with the most nominations at the Globes - only received 3 in the major areas. The two main stars (Knightley, McAvoy) were also shut out.
- Cate Blanchett earned two nominations this year (Elizabeth: The Golden Age, I’m Not There).
- Angelina Jolie was not recognized for her heartbreaking performance in A Mighty Heart.

Weinstein Co. Settles With Writers Guild

As expected, the agreement reached last week between United Artists and the Writers Guild of America has paved the way for other deals. The Weinstein Company, headed by brothers Bob and Harvey Weinstein, just finalized their own contract with the union late Friday. (Like the UA arrangement , this settlement does not apply to distributor MGM.)
Titles recently connected to the indie company include The Great Debaters, The Mist and Awake.
